Introduction to Scything

Fota House, Arboretum & Gardens are delighted to run a scything course in Fota’s Victorian Working Garden. The course will be run by Christopher Hayes and Susuanne Raven, two skilled scything practioners, with the assistance of Fergus O’ Regan.

The one day course will cover the following areas:-

  • An introduction to the scythe
  • Selection and set up
  • Scything safely
  • Mowing Techiques
  • Mainteance and Sharpening
  • Meadow Management

There will be tea and coffee on arrival (9.30am) and a light lunhc. The course will start at 10:00am sharp. Please note that there is a 5-10 minute walk from the Car Park to the Victorian Working Gardens.

This course is for all levels from beginners up; participants should bring their own scythes, however there may be some spares available (please request in advance by email: events@fotahouse.com). There will also be scythes and accessories for sale on the day.
