Tom Duffy Lecture on Mildred Anne Butler – August 10th

August 10 @ 16:30 - 18:30

Mildred Anne Butler Watercolours

Tom Duffy is an art historian, recently retired from lecturing in art history at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin after thirty-eight years. He is a graduate of Limerick College of Art (seventies); and studied under Anne Crookshank at Trinity College (1981-4) Tom has a PhD from NCAD in art history.

Tom has been working on Mildred Anne Butler for the past eight years and published articles on his research on the artist as well as given several talks in Dublin and in Kilkenny.

Mildred Butler specialised in watercolour painting at a time when oil painting was seen as the nobler medium.  As a woman artist Butler struggled for recognition in a man’s world and successfully managed to achieve fame during her lifetime. Butler was the second woman artist to have her work purchased for the British public collection through the Chantrey Bequest. She was elected as Associate to the Royal Watercolour Society, London which was dominated by men.  Her work was collected by members of the English Royalty and European aristocracy.

Tom Duffy’s lecture will touch on the career and will focus on the five paintings from the Fota collection and will place them in context of her overall work.
