Genetic Genealogy of the Barry Families – 16th of August @ 6:30pm – Drawing Room
The Carrigtwohill & District Historical Society present, Matt Barry of Pennsylvania who will give our  a presentation in relation to research undertaken for the Barry DNA Project, successor to the Barrymore DNA Project, as part of the National Heritage Week.  Admission Free, but donations are welcomed.

 

Free Tours of Fota House – 17th of August 2024 @ 12pm, 2pm & 3:30pm – Meet at Reception Desk

Discover the history of Fota House, the Smith- Barry Family and those who served them by exploring the many restored rooms. Go from opulent, Regency Rooms with neo-classical décor to the Servants wing, kitchens and more. Tours are free on this day only as part of Heritage Week but booking is required due to limited space.

Marie Guillot Lecture on Lady Barrymore’s daughters: Helen Agnes Post Eliot and Dorothy Smith-Barry Bell – 18th August 2024 @4:15pm – Drawing Room

Dorothy Bell was the last of the Smith-Barry family to live in Fota House along with her husband Major Bell. However not much is known about her sister Helen Agnes (Nellie) who lived at Port Eliot (Cornwall). Marie Guillot delves into the two women’s lives and highlights how during WWII, both of them trained as nurses, joining the medical teams for wounded soldiers and raising funds for the war effort.

Irish Bee Conservation Project – The Bees of Fota Gardens – Pat Deasy in Fota House Victorian Working Gardens22nd of August 2024 @12pm – The Frameyard

The IBCP was established to protect the natural environment for the Irish public and its future generations by supporting bee and pollinator conservation. Hear from expert Pat Deasy on the successes of Fota Gardens partnership with the Irish Bee Conservation Project (IBCP) including the installation of an apiary for the Irish Black Bee on the grounds of Fota House that supports almost 70 bee boxes around Fota Island as well as the junior pollinator trail and more.
