Heritage Week at Fota

This year we have a packed schedule of activities here at Fota so there is something for everyone! Pick a date and come along and join the fun. The year’s Heritage Week theme is Pastimes Past Times.

 

Pastimes at Fota Exhibition

Travel back in time and enjoy the pastimes of previous residents of Fota House. This fascinating exhibition explores the hobbies, games and field sports enjoyed by the gentry and their staff. This volunteer-led exhibition gives visitors a peek into the Fota collection, sharing previously un-exhibited pieces.

The exhibition runs in Fota House from 10am to 5pm from Sunday 17th August to Sunday 25th August. Admission Free – no need to book – just walk in !

Cork Heritage Open Day Saturday 17th August

Come along on Saturday 17th August at 12.30, 2pm or 3.30 for a free guided tour of Fota House OR at 11am and 1pm for a tour of our Victorian Working Garden. Spaces are limited so booking is essential. Call Tanya at 021 4815543 to secure your place.

Queen Maeve & the Honey Bees

This one is especially for our littler visitors who will imagine they are busy honeybees buzzing around the Victorian Working Gardens at Fota!

Find out about the different jobs that honey bees do inside and outside the hive, all to look after Queen Maeve and make sure the whole hive works as a team to make enough honey to feed everyone, all year round.

Tours run Monday 19th to Friday 23rd at 11AM. Places are limited so book now by calling Tanya at 021 4815543.

 

Cork Craft and Design

Join us during Heritage Week and the entire month of August for the Cork Craft & Design Annual Showcase Exhibition entitled Present Past which aims to celebrate the legacy and  ethos of Cork Craft & Design through the work of its makers against the  backdrop of Fota’s historic Library.  The exhibition reflects the ten years of Cork Craft & Design and features longstanding and new members who share an interest in material and story. Curated by Roisín Foley.

During Heritage week the following workshops/demos will be available to the public:

Monday 19th August. 1.30 to 3.30. Demo – Free Motion quilting/embroidery demo with Mary Palmer. To book a space with Mary please text or email 087 9481567 or marimu.designs@gmail.com

Thursday 22nd August 11.00 to 12.30. Workshop – Weaving with rushes – weave a small rush mat with Sonia Caldwell. Age 6 and up.

Thursday 22nd August 1.30 to 3.30.  Workshop – Straw crafts – make a harvest bow with Sonia Caldwell. Ages 8 and up.

Thursday 22nd August 3:30 to 5pm. Talk and demonstration by Sonia Caldwell on all things to do with straw and rush craft and a chance to try out different techniques – all ages welcome.

Gardening Exhibition “William & Eliza Beswick – A Life on the Move”

Come visit this enthralling volunteer-led exhibition on the life and times of Fota’s Head Gardener, William Beswick, and his family. This exhibition runs Monday to Friday 10am to 3pm in the Bothy House in the Victorian Working Gardens. No need to book – just walk in!
